Guelph Lake

Guelph Lake is a mid-sized flood-control reservoir on the Speed River north of Guelph, impounded behind the Guelph Dam and managed by the Grand River Conservation Authority. Its stained, weed-rich water runs shallow through the vegetated river arms and back bays and deepens toward the dam basin, and that split defines the fishery: largemouth and pike hold in the weedy bays while smallmouth relate to the harder, deeper structure toward the dam.

Grind today

Choppy — a 11 km/h average over 4.5 km of fetch keeps you on the north shore with short runs. Gusts spike to 49 km/h at times — check the hourly and time your launch. Good bite potential — the rising barometer leans toward a pickier bite. Fish the north shore where wind stacks bait and keep it tight to cover.

Powerboat

Go

Clear to launch — a 11 km/h S average over 4.5 km of fetch stays well within a powerboat's weight and power; easy to hold position. Gusts spike to 49 km/h at times — time your launch.

Kayak

Go

Clear to launch — a 11 km/h S average over 4.5 km of fetch stays well within a kayak's low, wind-caught profile; easy to hold position. Gusts spike to 49 km/h at times — time your launch.

Canoe

Marginal

Launchable but exposed — a 24 km/h average gust and 4.5 km of fetch will test an open canoe's shallow draft; put in on the north shore and stay tight to it. Gusts spike to 49 km/h at times — time your launch.
